When my Mom moved to heaven in 1993 I inherited the whole shebang since I was an only child........drawers full of half burnt candles , balls of multi-coloured yarn and buttons of all sizes , dust rags by the hundreds , bottles of vintage holy water labelled with dates , cases of Carnation evaporated milk bought on sale as well as 3 or 4 flats of Campbell's vegetable and tomato soups , rolls of toilet paper galore , etc The woman was always ready for Noah's Big Happening or a major power outage..
I gave away much of the useful and useable stuff to the Saint Vincent de Paul Society in our parish but kept a few of the family heirlooms .......furniture brought over from Ireland in the post Famine years by my greatuncle , Phillip Hayes and his sister , my old blind Aunt Kit ...... seen above in 1936 photo along with my Mom and Himself in the po-chair which my Dad had made for me. I still have memories of Aunt Kit sitting in her standing rocker ( bottom picture ) , gently stroking her cat and singing Gaelic "ditties". I was nin e years old when she died. My question to you today is simple. Do you have any antiques haunting your modern home furnishings ? If so , please share them with us .
I loved looking at the antique furniture you shared here. Wonderful family memories are priceless.
ReplyDeleteI will share them later. At work now. what great things you have.
ReplyDeleteI left most of the old "antique" furniture at home which belonged to my grandparents although not far as lovely as yours. When they died we took what we could to the East End of London where we lived. One of the things we had were old history books. I blogged on them about a year ago, when I brought them "home" to Switzerland from England - my blog is on Multiply, but the photo somehow got lost, so here is the link to Yahoo - History books
ReplyDeleteLovely chairs! I do not have any antique furnitures. But I have a few old things. I got some things from my fathers brother, it is like a vase and a few things going with it, then I also got a couple - a little girl and a boy in porcelain that I got from my grandmother, those are old. I treasure them dearly.
ReplyDeleteRight you are about warm memories , Tinkerbell , and the longer you live ... the farther back you can look to fully taste and appreciate them. Thanks for coming by and please come back again son.
ReplyDeleteJulie-Ann... you are on the computer at work !!! Keep your eyes peeled for the boss !! Just kidding , of course . Looking forward to seeing your precious objects of yesteryear.
ReplyDeleteThank you so much for the link , Tabbynera .... since , by profession , I spent most of my career dealing with North American native languages and cultures , I have managed to lay hands on many unique manuscripts and first editions of early grammars and dictionaries. I , like you , did a blog about them "once upon a time back in Yahoo country " LOL. Thak you so much for your kind visit and comment...... truly appreciated !
ReplyDeleteThanks for popping in , dear Mona... now that you have that great camera in you possession .... maybe you can snap off a few pictures of your treasures and tell us abot them. Hugs to you and Timmy....
ReplyDeleteAbsolutely nothing.
ReplyDeleteI am supposed to be doing studio work, but I manage to blog & email a bit. And my boss was gone for a bit also!!! I am actually here today to give tours, but no one has come in. I got the thank you cards caught up & all the dishes in the sink washed. Dishes that were NOT mine. So I think a little blog/email time is ok.
ReplyDeleteHey there , Chips... you could maybe post an abstract picture of nothing then ????
ReplyDeleteHow interesting!
ReplyDeleteNow that sounds like my photo collection! **LOL**
ReplyDeleteYes, indeed I have a lot of old things around here. I have the trunk my great grandfather used on his trip out of Ireland. I have a plate that my great grandmother served cakes on. What is interesting, my cousin on my dad's side (they were brits) has in his posession a medal given to my great grandfather Radford for defending Montreal against the Fenians. When his son Elsden married a good catholic girl named Johannah Howard (my Nannie) the religion was switched. I will take some photos of what I have and post them up.
ReplyDeleteMom moved to heaven in 1993 - I think that is the most beautiful comment!!
ReplyDeleteHeirlooms are so precious. I have a couple and they mean so much to me.
Pattimari.... thank you for dropping by... and Chips..... don't be too hard on yourself !! How about your photo gallery of "Winter in Ohio "?
ReplyDeleteGreat stuff , Barb.... you should get it all out here for us to see and appreciate..... maybe your great grand-dad was among the group of volunteers that sent the American Fenians packing near the Vermont-Quebec border shortly after Confederation.... ?
ReplyDeleteThat's where she said she was going after death , Cindy Anne..... maybe you could tell us a wee bit about your treasured items ??? Hugs and play it cool !!
ReplyDeleteI posted some of my heirlooms. Maybe more later. Fun to remember those who have gone before me.
